About This Qualification

This is a qualification for building surveyors or certifiers who apply knowledge of compliance requirements and construction methods and materials to the implementation of statutory building surveying requirements or to the provision of advisory building surveying services. The scope of work undertaken by building surveyors applies to all Classes of residential and commercial buildings as defined in the National Construction Code (NCC), up to three storeys and not exceeding 2,000 square metres in floor area. Building surveyors work in a highly regulated environment and require an understanding of relevant compliance requirements as well as traditional, new and emerging construction methods and materials. They make a significant contribution to the development and construction of the built environment, often working in collaboration with specialist consultants to assess and verify that proposed and actual building works are compliant and to ensure the safety of building occupants. Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to building surveying in some states and territories. For further information, check with the relevant regulatory authority.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available for RPL?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that hold this specific qualification on their scope. At this stage, we are accepting registrations of interest from experienced building surveyors.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest ensures you are the first to know when a pathway becomes available. It also allows our consultants to begin a preliminary review of your experience, so you are well-positioned for the evidence-gathering phase once we launch.
Is RPL the same as a traditional study pathway?
RPL is a different form of assessment, not a different standard. It assesses the expertise you have already gained on the job against national standards. If a qualified assessor determines your evidence meets the requirements, the resulting qualification is identical to one earned through study.
Does this qualification cover commercial buildings?
Yes, this Advanced Diploma covers both residential and commercial buildings (Classes 2 to 9) up to three storeys and not exceeding 2,000 square metres in floor area, in addition to Class 1 and 10 residential structures.
What happens if I have experience but lack evidence for specific units?
If an assessor identifies gaps in your evidence portfolio, the RTO will provide targeted gap training. This allows you to complete only the specific areas required rather than repeating the entire qualification.
