USI — Unique Student Identifier
Everything you need to know about your training records, your Unique Student Identifier, and how nationally recognised training is reported in Australia.
Last updated: 16 May 2026
If you're completing a nationally recognised qualification in Australia, you will generally need a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Your training will also be reported through AVETMISS, Australia's official vocational education and training reporting system.
Section I: What Is a USI?
A USI is your personal education number. It stays with you for life and is used to link your nationally recognised training records across Australia.
Your USI allows you to:
- Keep one lifelong record of your nationally recognised training
- Access your official training transcript online
- Have your results securely linked to your training record
- Support enrolment, certification, funding, and verification processes where required
Create your USI on the official government website:
You will need to provide some basic personal details and a form of identification, such as a passport or driver's licence. Follow the on-screen steps to set up your account.
Who needs a USI?
Almost everyone studying nationally recognised vocational education and training in Australia needs a USI, including:
- Domestic students
- International students studying onshore in Australia
- Students seeking VET loans or higher education support, such as HELP loans
- Students completing a qualification or statement of attainment through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Section II: How Your Training Is Reported (AVETMISS Explained)
When you complete nationally recognised training, your results are reported through AVETMISS, the national data standard for vocational education and training activity in Australia.
AVETMISS reporting helps ensure your qualification or units of competency are recorded correctly, securely linked to your USI, and available for official transcript and verification purposes.
What AVETMISS reporting does
- Confirms your qualification or units are part of the national VET reporting system
- Links your results to your USI
- Stores training activity with NCVER — the National Centre for Vocational Education Research
- Supports official training records that can be recognised Australia-wide
How often is training reported?
The minimum reporting requirement for training providers is once per year. Annual reporting covers training activity from January to December, with final submission usually occurring in January or February of the following year.
Some providers may submit or correct data more frequently through additional reporting cycles. This means missing or incorrect records can often be updated after the original reporting period.
How long until your USI is updated?
Once your training has been reported, results will often appear on your USI transcript within approximately three days of submission. In some cases, allow a few weeks depending on validation checks, reporting cycles, and the provider's submission schedule.
Important: Without a valid USI, your certificate or statement of attainment cannot be issued. You may be able to start enrolment before providing your USI, but it must be supplied before completion or certification.
Section III: USI FAQs
1. Do I need a USI if I'm offshore and not in Australia?
If you are offshore and not yet studying in Australia, a USI is generally not required at that stage. If you later study nationally recognised training in Australia, or if a training provider requires a USI for your enrolment or certification, you will need to create one.
2. How long does it take for my USI records to update?
USI records often update within a few days after your training provider submits the data — commonly around three days. Sometimes it can take a few weeks, depending on validation checks and reporting schedules.
3. Is a USI mandatory?
Yes, for most students completing nationally recognised vocational education and training in Australia. You usually need a USI to receive your qualification, access your official transcript, and apply for certain funding or loan programs.
Important: Without a USI, your certificate cannot be issued.
4. Can I enrol without a USI?
Yes, but only temporarily. You may be able to begin enrolment before providing your USI, but you must provide it before your training is completed or your certification documents are issued.
5. Can my qualification or units of competency be removed from my USI transcript?
Usually, qualifications and units that were correctly issued and properly reported remain on your USI transcript as part of your permanent training record.
However, records can be changed, removed, or cancelled in some cases, including:
- If your training provider reported the wrong course, unit, or outcome and later corrects it
- If missing or incorrect data is updated through the USI transcript update process
- If a regulator such as ASQA cancels qualifications or statements of attainment issued by an RTO that was found to be seriously non-compliant
In simple terms: Records can be removed or changed, but usually only where there was an error, correction, or regulatory action.
6. What happens if my qualification or units are not reported to my USI on time?
If your training provider misses a reporting deadline, your results are not necessarily lost. The provider can submit or correct your data in a later reporting cycle, such as a quarterly or annual submission.
Once submitted and validated, your results should appear on your USI transcript. In most cases, your qualification can still be issued, but the process may be delayed.
Important to know:
- AVETMISS reporting is ongoing and cumulative, so data can be updated and corrected throughout the year
- If data is never reported, your qualification may not appear on your USI transcript
- Missing records can affect verification for jobs, licensing, or migration purposes
What should you do if your results are missing?
- Contact your training provider first
- Confirm your USI was provided correctly
- Ask when your data will be reported or resubmitted
In short: Missed reporting usually means delay, not loss — but the data must be corrected or submitted before it can appear on your USI transcript.
7. What if I entered the wrong details when creating my USI?
If your personal details, such as your name or date of birth, do not match your official identification documents, your training provider may not be able to report your results correctly. Your qualification could be delayed or certification may not be issued until the details are corrected.
What you should do:
- Log in to your USI account and update your details immediately
- Make sure your information matches your official ID exactly
- Check small details such as spelling, middle names, and date format
