Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

When will RPL for this qualification be available?
We are currently in the process of identifying and vetting Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that possess the specific mining industry expertise required to assess this qualification. By registering your interest, you will be the first to know when a partner is ready to review your evidence.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering allows us to gauge industry demand and prioritize the finalisation of RTO partnerships for this specific qualification. It also ensures you receive direct guidance on gathering evidence before the formal enrolment window opens.
Is RPL for an Open Cut Examiner the same as completing the course?
Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment pathway that results in the same nationally recognised qualification. The difference lies in the evidence: instead of learning new content, you are demonstrating that you already possess the required competencies through your years of on-the-job experience.
What kind of mining experience is most relevant for this RPL?
Assessors will look for significant experience in surface coal operations, specifically in roles involving safety leadership, risk management, and the supervision of heavy vehicle interactions and excavation activities.
Will I need to provide evidence of explosives handling?
As explosives management is a core component of this qualification, you will likely need to provide documentation showing your involvement in the storage, handling, or transport of explosives within a mining context.
How does the assessor verify my technical mining knowledge?
The RTO's qualified assessor will review your portfolio of evidence. They may also conduct a technical interview or request a workplace observation to ensure your practical skills meet the national standards for an Open Cut Examiner.
