About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of highly skilled outdoor recreation leaders who lead and supervise dependent participants in recreational activities according to activity plans, which they develop. These leaders are proficient in recreational activity techniques and have well-developed leadership skills to manage group participation, cohesion, operational logistics, risk and significant problems as they arise. While actions are limited by the parameters of plans, policies and procedures, they work with a considerable amount of autonomy. This qualification reflects the role of leaders who can work at or close to base but often work in remote areas distant from support. Communication systems may be unreliable and assistance from medical and emergency services may not be readily available. They are expected to make high level independent judgements about logistical, technical, safety and emergency response issues. This qualification provides a pathway to work for any type of organisation that delivers outdoor recreation activities including commercial, not-for-profit and government organisations. The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

When will RPL for this qualification be available?
We are currently in the process of vetting Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to ensure they meet our standards for rigorous and fair assessment. By registering your interest, you will be notified the moment a pathway is established.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering ensures you are the first to be contacted when we secure a partner RTO. It also helps us demonstrate the demand for this qualification, which can expedite the partnership process.
Is RPL the same as completing the study?
Yes. The outcome is the same nationally recognised qualification. The difference is that RPL assesses your existing skills and experience as evidence of competency, rather than requiring you to learn what you already know.
What kind of remote experience is valued?
Assessors typically look for evidence of high-level independent judgment in areas distant from support, where communication may be unreliable and emergency services are not readily available.
How is search and rescue competency demonstrated through RPL?
Evidence may include participation in search and rescue exercises, incident reports where you coordinated a response, or records of maintaining search-specific equipment.
Will my diverse activity experience count?
The qualification allows for various electives. Experience across activities like bicycle touring, bushwalking, or rafting can often be mapped against the technical units required for the full qualification.
