What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

When will RPL for the Diploma of Outdoor Leadership be available?+
We are currently in the process of vetting Registered Training Organisation (RTO) partners who meet our standards for quality and integrity. This ensures that when the pathway opens, you are guided by an organisation that respects the depth of your leadership experience.
Why should I register my interest now?+
By registering, you ensure you are among the first to be notified once a suitable RTO partner is secured. It also allows us to understand the demand for this qualification, helping us advocate for a fair and efficient recognition process for outdoor professionals.
Is recognition of prior learning the same as completing a course?+
RPL is a rigorous assessment process that measures your existing expertise against national standards. It is not a shortcut, but a different form of evidence. The qualification issued is identical to one earned through study, as it acknowledges that your experience is evidence of your competency.
What level of management experience is required for this Diploma?+
This qualification reflects the role of senior leaders or operations managers who work with significant autonomy. You should have experience in program planning, risk management, and the leadership of personnel within an outdoor recreation context.
Do I need to provide evidence of specific outdoor activities?+
Yes, while the core units focus on leadership and operations, the elective units often require evidence of technical proficiency in specific activity techniques. The assessor will look for documentation that shows you can safely lead and supervise participants in these environments.
How is risk management assessed in this qualification?+
Risk management is a cornerstone of outdoor leadership. You will need to demonstrate how you identify hazards, interpret environmental conditions, and implement systematic approaches to safety and emergency response across various programs.
What does registering my interest mean?+
Registering your interest means you'd like to be notified when this qualification becomes available through RPL. There's no commitment. We'll contact you when an RTO partnership is confirmed for this qualification.
Why isn't this qualification available yet?+
RPL It works with partner RTOs to deliver qualifications. We're currently exploring RTO partnerships for this qualification. Registering your interest helps us prioritise which qualifications to focus on next.
What happens after I register my interest?+
You'll receive a confirmation, and we'll keep your details on file. When a partner RTO is confirmed for this qualification, we'll contact you with the next steps, including how to start your free skills review.
Can I still do a free skills review for this qualification?+
Yes. A free skills review helps you understand whether your experience aligns with the qualification requirements, regardless of whether an RTO partner is currently available. It's a useful first step while you wait.
