Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

✈️

Work History & Roles

  • Position descriptions for airborne specialist roles
  • Records of flight hours and operational deployments
📋

Flight & Operational Logs

  • Pre-flight and post-flight equipment checklists
  • Mission logs and flight manifests identifying your specific duties
  • Records of risk assessments and fatigue management plans
🛠️

Technical Specialisations

  • Evidence of winching, rappelling, or external load operations
  • Logs detailing sensor system management or intelligence operations
  • Records of aeronautical radio operator duties
🛟

  • Emergency breathing system training and utilisation logs
  • Safety briefing and debriefing records for mission personnel
🎖️

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available through RPL It?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) for this specific aviation qualification. While not immediately available for assessment, we encourage you to register your interest to be notified the moment the pathway opens.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering ensures you are the first to know when we have a partner RTO ready to assess your airborne experience. It also allows us to provide you with early guidance on the types of flight logs and operational evidence you should begin organising.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?
Yes. A qualification achieved through Recognition of Prior Learning is identical to one earned through traditional study. It is nationally recognised and meets the same rigorous standards of the AVI Training Package.
Can my military airborne experience count toward this qualification?
Lived experience in military aviation environments is highly relevant to this qualification. Many of the core units, such as risk management and human factors, align directly with military flight crew training and operational standards.
Will this qualification automatically grant me a CASA authorisation?
No qualification alone grants a CASA authorisation. However, it provides the formal evidence of competency that CASA requires for aerial work roles. You will still need to meet CASA's specific regulatory and medical requirements for your desired authorisation.
What role does 'Human Factors' play in the assessment?
Human factors management is a core component of aviation safety. The assessment will look for evidence of how you manage fatigue, communication, and decision-making within the cockpit or cabin environment to maintain the safety of the aircraft and personnel.
