What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

Is the Cert IV in Surveying and Spatial Information Services currently available?+
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to deliver this specific qualification. While not immediately available for enrolment, we are actively preparing the pathway.
Why should I register my interest now?+
Registering your interest ensures you are the first to know when we finalise our RTO partnerships. It also allows us to begin a preliminary review of your experience so you are well-positioned when the qualification launches.
Is RPL the same as completing a training course?+
No. Recognition of Prior Learning assesses the skills you have already acquired through years of work. It is a process of documenting your existing expertise rather than learning new material from scratch.
Does this qualification allow me to perform cadastral surveying?+
This qualification provides the technical foundation for survey work; however, cadastral surveying must always be performed under the supervision of a registered surveyor as per state regulatory requirements.
What if I have experience in a specific sector like mining?+
Surveying skills are highly transferable. Whether your experience is in civil construction, mining, agriculture, or town planning, your technical competence with GNSS and spatial data is valid evidence for RPL.
What software experience is considered relevant for this RPL process?+
Experience with industry-standard GIS software, spatial data management systems, and computation tools is highly relevant. Documenting your ability to operate these applications is a key part of the evidence portfolio.
What does registering my interest mean?+
Registering your interest means you'd like to be notified when this qualification becomes available through RPL. There's no commitment. We'll contact you when an RTO partnership is confirmed for this qualification.
Why isn't this qualification available yet?+
RPL It works with partner RTOs to deliver qualifications. We're currently exploring RTO partnerships for this qualification. Registering your interest helps us prioritise which qualifications to focus on next.
What happens after I register my interest?+
You'll receive a confirmation, and we'll keep your details on file. When a partner RTO is confirmed for this qualification, we'll contact you with the next steps, including how to start your free skills review.
Can I still do a free skills review for this qualification?+
Yes. A free skills review helps you understand whether your experience aligns with the qualification requirements, regardless of whether an RTO partner is currently available. It's a useful first step while you wait.
