Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available via RPL?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations to offer this specific maritime qualification. While not immediately available for enrolment, registering your interest ensures you receive updates as soon as the pathway is open.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering allows us to review your current experience against the qualification requirements early. It also helps us gauge industry demand, which can accelerate the partnership process with our delivering RTOs.
Is RPL the same as completing a maritime course?
RPL is a different pathway to the same nationally recognised qualification. While a course teaches you new skills, RPL assesses the expertise you have already gained on the job, treating your experience as valid evidence of competency.
What AMSA requirements are needed beyond this qualification?
To obtain your Master up to 45m Certificate of Competency, AMSA also requires specific sea service, a current first aid certificate (HLTAID011), and a LROCP issued by ACMA. We recommend checking the latest Marine Order 505 requirements directly with AMSA.
Will my sea service in smaller vessels count?
AMSA has specific requirements regarding the size of vessels and the nature of the sea service. During our review process, we will look at your logs to help determine how your prior command experience aligns with the standards for a 45-metre vessel.
