What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

When will RPL for this qualification be available?+
We are currently in the process of vetting RTO partners who have the specific scope and expertise required for this high-level maritime qualification. By registering your interest, you will be the first to know when the pathway is open.
Why should I register my interest now?+
Registering allows us to gauge demand and prioritise the onboarding of maritime RTOs. It also ensures you receive a preliminary review of your experience so you are prepared once the formal process begins.
Is RPL the same as completing a maritime course?+
RPL is an assessment-only pathway that recognises the skills you have already developed on the job. It is not a training program; rather, it is a method for a qualified assessor to verify that your existing expertise meets the national standard.
Will this qualify me for an AMSA Master Unlimited certificate?+
This qualification meets the academic requirements for the Master Unlimited certification. However, you must still meet AMSA's requirements for sea service, STCW short courses, medical fitness, and their final independent assessment.
What happens if I have gaps in my evidence?+
If the assessor identifies areas where your documentation does not fully meet the unit requirements, our RTO partners will provide targeted gap training. This allows you to complete only what is necessary rather than repeating what you already know.
What does registering my interest mean?+
Registering your interest means you'd like to be notified when this qualification becomes available through RPL. There's no commitment. We'll contact you when an RTO partnership is confirmed for this qualification.
Why isn't this qualification available yet?+
RPL It works with partner RTOs to deliver qualifications. We're currently exploring RTO partnerships for this qualification. Registering your interest helps us prioritise which qualifications to focus on next.
What happens after I register my interest?+
You'll receive a confirmation, and we'll keep your details on file. When a partner RTO is confirmed for this qualification, we'll contact you with the next steps, including how to start your free skills review.
Can I still do a free skills review for this qualification?+
Yes. A free skills review helps you understand whether your experience aligns with the qualification requirements, regardless of whether an RTO partner is currently available. It's a useful first step while you wait.
