About This Qualification
This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of master on commercial vessels up to 24 m in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Please note: RTO to insert on the testamur, the specialist elective unit group selected from the group choice below.
Important: RPL It Australia is a student support service. All assessment and qualification issuance is conducted by the delivering Registered Training Organisation. RPL It does not deliver training, conduct assessments, or issue qualifications.

What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.
You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

This qualification is a primary requirement for obtaining an AMSA Certificate of Competency (CoC) as a Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal. Please note that the qualification alone does not grant a licence; candidates must also meet AMSA requirements regarding sea service, medical fitness, and final assessments.

We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with RTOs that specialise in maritime operations. We recommend registering your interest so we can notify you the moment the RPL pathway for this qualification is active.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering interest allows us to gauge demand and accelerate our partnership discussions with RTOs. It also ensures you are the first to receive guidance on how your existing sea service can be used as evidence for assessment.
Is RPL the same as completing a maritime course?
RPL is an assessment-only pathway that recognises the skills you have already developed on the job. It is not a training course; instead, it is a process of demonstrating to an assessor that your experience meets the national standards for the qualification.
Will this qualification automatically get me my AMSA Master 24m ticket?
No. While the Certificate III is a mandatory component, AMSA also requires documented qualifying sea service, a valid medical fitness certificate, and the successful completion of a final AMSA assessment.
What if my First Aid certificate has expired?
The unit HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is a core requirement. If your evidence is outdated, our RTO partners may identify this as a gap. We can guide you on how to address such gaps through targeted training alongside the RPL process.
