Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

📋

Work History & Roles

  • Current Australian Electrician Licence
  • Detailed CV outlining substation experience
  • Position descriptions from ESI employers

Substation Maintenance

  • Maintenance logs for transformers and circuit breakers
  • Inspections of HV plant and equipment
  • Records of direct current (d.c.) system repairs
🔍

Diagnosis & Testing

  • Fault finding reports and diagnostic logs
  • Secondary injection testing records
  • Protection and control system commissioning data
🛡️

Safety & Compliance

  • High-voltage switching programs
  • Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)
  • Environmental and WHS policy implementation records
🛠️

Installation Works

  • Commissioning checklists for substation components
  • Marked-up electrical drawings and specifications
  • Photos of HV equipment installation

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is the Certificate IV in ESI - Substations currently available via RPL?
We are in the process of identifying RTO partners who meet our standards for this specific ESI qualification. Currently, we are accepting registrations of interest from experienced substation technicians to help us determine the demand for this recognition pathway.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest ensures you are the first to be notified when a partner RTO opens their RPL intake for this qualification. It also allows our consultants to begin a preliminary review of your experience so you are prepared when the process commences.
Is RPL the same as completing the full training course?
The outcome is identical. A qualification achieved through RPL is nationally recognised and carries the same weight as one achieved through study. The difference lies in the evidence—RPL assesses the skills you have already mastered on the job rather than teaching them from scratch.
What are the entry requirements for this qualification?
Candidates must hold a current Australian Electrician licence or a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician. This ensures that the advanced substation skills build upon a solid foundation of electrical safety and theory.
Does this qualification cover high-voltage switching?
Yes, the qualification includes competencies related to switching, maintaining HV plant, and working safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus. Your evidence should demonstrate your practical experience in these high-stakes environments.
What happens if my evidence has gaps?
If the RTO assessor identifies areas where your evidence does not fully meet the national standard, gap training will be provided. This targeted learning ensures you meet all competency requirements without needing to repeat the areas where you are already proficient.
