About This Qualification

This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to manufacture, fit, assemble, erect, operate, test, find and diagnose faults, and alter and repair electrical and electronic equipment including instrumentation systems. It does not include installation of any electrical wiring systems within an electrical installation as prescribed in current industry standards. Functions include maintenance planning and scheduling as well as electrical wiring work if it is associated with assembling, maintaining, terminating or altering the wiring between electrical components within power generating plant or machinery. Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

📋

Work History & Roles

  • Comprehensive resume highlighting ESI maintenance experience
  • Detailed position descriptions from power generation facilities
  • Records of employment and third-party validation letters

Technical Documentation

  • Annotated circuit diagrams and electrical schematics
  • Fault-finding logs and diagnostic reports
  • Maintenance schedules for power generating plant
🛡️

Safety & Compliance

  • Permit to work (PTW) records and isolation logs
  • Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEA) reports
  • WHS risk assessment and control documentation
🔧

Operational Evidence

  • Calibration records for instrumentation systems
  • Photos of assembled or repaired electrical components
  • Site environmental plan implementation records
👥

Leadership & Coordination

  • Supervision logs for maintenance teams
  • Workplace communication and handover reports
  • Substation construction coordination documents

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is RPL currently available for this qualification?
This qualification is currently in our development phase. We are actively seeking to partner with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that specialise in electricity supply industry training to provide a robust recognition pathway.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest allows us to gauge industry demand. It helps us demonstrate to potential RTO partners that there is a pool of experienced technicians ready for assessment, which can accelerate the availability of the RPL process.
Is RPL the same as completing a standard course?
RPL is a different form of evidence, but it leads to the same nationally recognised qualification. While traditional study focuses on teaching new skills, RPL focuses on helping you demonstrate the expertise you have already acquired on the job.
What if I have experience but no formal documentation?
Documentation is the bridge between experience and evidence. If you lack specific records, your guide can help you identify alternative ways to demonstrate your competency, such as statutory declarations or practical demonstrations for an assessor.
Does this qualification cover high-voltage work?
Yes, it includes competencies related to high-voltage substation construction and maintenance, though it is specifically focused on the generation sector rather than general electrical installation.
How long does the RPL process typically take?
The duration depends on how quickly you can compile your evidence portfolio. Once submitted to an RTO, the assessment phase is generally more efficient than the time required for classroom-based learning.
