About This Qualification

This qualification provides signing skills to communicate in Auslan with some confidence on familiar, routine and some non-routine matters. Communication may take place in any situation including personal, public, social, employment and educational domains. This qualification aligns to an adaptation, for sign languages, of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), BI: Independent User. This is an Auslan signer who can: understand the main points when clear, standard language (which for sign language users may be a locally used variation) is used and the topics are familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.deal with most situations likely to arise where the sign language is usedproduce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal interestdescribe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. The volume of learning for a Certificate III is typically 1 to 2 years. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

This qualification focuses on communication skills at an independent user level. Professional interpreting requires higher-level qualifications and specific accreditation through NAATI, though this certificate provides a vital foundation.
What level of signing is required for this pathway?
The Certificate III in Auslan is aligned with the Independent User level (B1). You should be able to understand main points on familiar matters and produce simple, connected communication on topics of personal or professional interest.
