About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who translate special purpose texts from one language to another, including spoken or signed languages, to convey information to a known or wide unknown audience. The translation produced must contain accurate information that is in the source text, and be fit for purpose, taking into account target audience and the end use. The Advanced Diploma of Translating prepares translators to translate texts which contain complex language, concepts and terminology. There may be significant equivalence problems between source and target texts, which calls for extensive research. Audiences may be found in commerce and marketing, government and international relations – including immigration, both regular and humanitarian – the media, and sectors generally considered to be professional, such as law, health and medicine, technology and science. Assignments may deal with material which requires significant quality assurance processes as the consequences of mistranslation can be far reaching and there are significant implications for client reputation and image. The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is RPL currently available for the Advanced Diploma of Translating?
We are currently in the research and partnership phase for this qualification. While we don't offer immediate enrolment, we are actively seeking RTO partners who understand the rigour of professional translation.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest allows us to gauge demand and keep you informed. It helps us demonstrate to our RTO partners that there is a community of experienced translators ready for formal recognition.
Is RPL the same as completing a translation course?
Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment process, not a teaching one. It treats your years of translating experience as evidence of competency, rather than requiring you to repeat foundational study.
Does this qualification involve NAATI certification?
This is a nationally recognised academic qualification. While it aligns with many professional standards, NAATI certification is a separate process managed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.
What kind of translation experience is most relevant?
Assessors typically look for experience with complex texts in fields like law, health, science, or international relations, where extensive research and professional judgement are required.
