Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

  • Position descriptions for roles involving vehicle maintenance or parts handling
  • Logbooks or work diaries recording daily workshop tasks and inspections
🛡️

Safety & Workplace Practices

  • Evidence of following Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and environmental waste disposal protocols
  • Workplace reports demonstrating routine problem-solving in a mechanical setting
⚙️

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available through RPL It?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) who can assess this specific automotive qualification. By registering your interest, you will be the first to know when we are ready to guide you through the recognition process.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering your interest helps us gauge demand and prioritise which RTO partnerships we finalise first. It also ensures you receive early access to our free skills review once the pathway is active, allowing you to understand how your experience aligns with the qualification requirements.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?
Yes. A qualification achieved through Recognition of Prior Learning is issued by a Registered Training Organisation and carries the same national weight as one earned through traditional classroom study. The only difference is how you demonstrate your competency—through evidence of your existing skills rather than new learning.
Can I use experience from working on my own vehicles as evidence?
While professional workshop experience is highly valued, documented hobbyist experience or self-directed projects can often support your application. We will guide you on how to present this experience as valid evidence, such as through photos, videos, and third-party verification of your technical skills.
Does this qualification cover motorcycles or marine craft?
Yes, this qualification is designed as a broad vocational preparation. It includes units on identifying components for a wide range of vehicles, including light and heavy vehicles, motorcycles, marine craft, and outdoor power equipment, depending on the elective units selected for your portfolio.
