Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

🔧

Work History & Roles

  • A current resume detailing your workshop experience
  • Position descriptions outlining underbody service duties
  • Letters of employment or references from workshop managers
🛡️

Safety & Environment

  • Evidence of following workshop safety protocols and PPE use
  • Records of environmental best practice for fluid and part disposal
  • Workplace safety induction or training records
🚗

Underbody Service Records

  • Job cards for steering, suspension, or braking system inspections
  • Diagnostic reports identifying basic automotive faults
  • Photos or videos of underbody component replacement and refitting
🔥

Specialised Repair Evidence

  • Records of exhaust system fabrication or welding repairs
  • Evidence of radiator testing and cooling system servicing
  • Soldering or thermal cutting project documentation
🛠️

Tools & Equipment

  • Maintenance logs for workshop tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Evidence of using specialised underbody repair machinery
  • Toolbox inventory or equipment proficiency records

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available through RPL It Australia?
Not yet. We are currently in the stage of identifying suitable RTO partners who meet our standards for automotive recognition. By registering your interest, you help us demonstrate demand to our partners, which can accelerate the availability of this pathway.
Why should I register my interest?
Registration ensures you are the first to be notified as soon as a partnership is finalised. It also allows us to provide you with preliminary guidance on the evidence you might need to gather, giving you a head start on the recognition process.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?
Yes. A qualification earned through Recognition of Prior Learning is issued by a Registered Training Organisation and carries the same national weight as one earned through a classroom. The only difference is how you demonstrate your competency—through evidence of experience rather than new learning.
Can I get a specialisation in Exhaust or Radiator Repair?
Yes, the AUR21220 qualification allows for specialisations in General Underbody, Exhaust, or Radiator and Cooling System Repair. When the pathway opens, we will guide you in providing specific evidence that aligns with your chosen area of expertise.
What kind of workshop evidence will I need?
Assessors typically look for practical proof of your work, such as job cards, workshop logs, safety checklists, and photos of your repairs. We will provide a clear guide on how to document your daily tasks to meet the required standards.
