What is an RPL Qualification?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process within Australia's Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It evaluates your existing skills, knowledge, and experience — gained through work, life, or informal training — against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

If you can demonstrate competency, you receive the same qualification as someone who completed the full course. It's the same certificate, issued by the same Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and recognised by the same employers and licensing bodies Australia-wide.

RPL qualifications are listed on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and registered on training.gov.au, the national register. They range from Certificate I (entry level) to Graduate Diploma (postgraduate level).

Who is Eligible for RPL?

RPL is designed for experienced workers who have the skills but not the paper qualifications. You don't need prior formal study — your work experience, on-the-job training, volunteer work, and life skills can all count as evidence.

RPL may be right for you if:

  • You have several years of industry experience in your field
  • You learned your skills on the job, through mentoring, or self-directed learning
  • You need a formal qualification for licensing, career advancement, or migration
  • You want to get qualified without repeating what you already know
  • You hold overseas qualifications that aren't recognised in Australia
