What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

Why should I register my interest?+
Registering ensures you receive priority notification once the pathway is live. It also helps us gauge industry demand, allowing us to advocate for more accessible recognition pathways for senior veterinary nurses.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?+
Yes. Whether achieved through study or recognition of prior learning, the qualification is issued by a Registered Training Organisation and holds the same national weight and industry standing.
What are the entry requirements for this Diploma?+
To be eligible, you must already hold a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (or equivalent) and demonstrate extensive experience working at that level, including leadership and autonomous clinical care.
How do the specialisations work?+
The Diploma allows for specialisations in Surgical, Dental, Emergency and Critical Care, or General Practice. Your evidence portfolio will need to reflect the specific elective units required for your chosen stream.
Does this qualification allow me to perform surgery?+
No. Veterinary nurses work under the supervision of a registered veterinarian. This qualification recognises your ability to provide advanced nursing support, but it does not change the legal restrictions on veterinary surgery.
What does registering my interest mean?+
Registering your interest means you'd like to be notified when this qualification becomes available through RPL. There's no commitment. We'll contact you when an RTO partnership is confirmed for this qualification.
Why isn't this qualification available yet?+
RPL It works with partner RTOs to deliver qualifications. We're currently exploring RTO partnerships for this qualification. Registering your interest helps us prioritise which qualifications to focus on next.
What happens after I register my interest?+
You'll receive a confirmation, and we'll keep your details on file. When a partner RTO is confirmed for this qualification, we'll contact you with the next steps, including how to start your free skills review.
Can I still do a free skills review for this qualification?+
Yes. A free skills review helps you understand whether your experience aligns with the qualification requirements, regardless of whether an RTO partner is currently available. It's a useful first step while you wait.
