About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of technologists and those in similar paraprofessional roles in the plastics, rubber and cablemaking sectors. They apply in-depth knowledge of materials, process, equipment and problem solving to analyse performance and failure in equipment and products and to assist in the development of new/modified products. They are not required to be competent to operate production equipment but will understand the principles behind the relevant production and support processes. Products and components may be for commercial, industrial or consumer markets and be made from natural or synthetic polymers covering thermoplastics as well as thermosetting polymers. Production may be long runs of standard products, short runs, or ‘one offs’ of specialised products. There are no specific licenses that relate to this qualification. However, some units in this qualification may have licensing or regulatory requirements in some jurisdictions. Local regulations should be checked for details.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

💼

Work History & Roles

  • Comprehensive CV or work history
  • Detailed position descriptions
  • Organisational charts showing technical seniority
🧪

Product Development

  • Prototype development documentation
  • Material selection reports
  • Product testing and failure analysis records
⚙️

Process Improvement

  • Root cause analysis for equipment failure
  • Process flow diagrams and optimization logs
  • Structured problem-solving reports
🛡️

Safety & Environment

  • Site safety audit reports
  • Sustainability implementation plans
  • Hazard identification and risk assessments
📊

Technical Leadership

  • Team briefing notes and leadership records
  • Quality assurance checklists
  • Project management documentation for new plant equipment

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

When will RPL for this qualification be available?
We are currently in the research and development phase, identifying Registered Training Organisation partners who meet our standards for polymer technology assessment.
Why should I register my interest now?
Your registration helps us demonstrate demand to our RTO partners, which can accelerate the availability of this specific recognition pathway.
Is RPL the same as completing a polymer study course?
While the resulting qualification is identical, RPL assesses the expertise you have already gained on the job rather than requiring you to repeat learning in a classroom.
What kind of experience is required for this Diploma?
Assessors typically look for paraprofessional experience in product development, material analysis, or technical troubleshooting within the plastics, rubber, or cablemaking sectors.
Will I need to demonstrate practical skills?
As part of the formal assessment, an RTO assessor may request a technical interview or a practical demonstration to verify your competency against national standards.
