About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of technicians who use production equipment to produce polymer products and components. They apply theoretical and technical knowledge and well-developed skills, exercising judgement in areas such as start-up, shutdown procedures and quality assurance. Operators apply their product and process knowledge to anticipate and solve a range of product variances and/or product faults. Products and components may be for commercial, industrial or consumer markets and be made from natural or synthetic polymers covering thermoplastics as well as thermosetting polymers. Production may be long runs of standard products, short runs, or ‘one offs’ of specialised products. There are no specific licenses that relate to this qualification. However, some units in this qualification may have licensing or regulatory requirements in some jurisdictions. Local regulations should be checked for details.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

📋

Work History & Roles

  • A detailed resume outlining your time as a machine operator or die setter
  • Position descriptions highlighting your technical responsibilities
  • Employment contracts or letters of reference from polymer manufacturers
⚙️

Production Records

  • Logbooks showing start-up and shutdown procedures for production equipment
  • Batch records and production schedules for standard or specialised runs
  • Records of machine adjustments for product variances or faults

Quality & Compliance

  • Quality assurance checklists and completed inspection reports
  • Safety inductions and evidence of following OHS/WHS protocols
  • Records demonstrating the application of quality standards to polymer products
🛠️

Technical Skill Evidence

  • Photos or videos of die setting, mould changes, or cablemaking processes
  • Maintenance logs for plastics or rubber production machinery
  • Incident reports or fault-finding documentation you have authored

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

When will RPL for the Certificate III in Polymer Processing be available?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that have this qualification on their scope. By registering your interest, you will be the first to know when we are ready to begin the assessment process.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest allows us to gauge demand and expedite the onboarding of the right RTO partners. It also ensures you are prioritised for a free skills review as soon as the pathway is active.
Is RPL the same as studying for the qualification?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment-only pathway. Instead of attending classes to learn new skills, you provide evidence that you already possess the competencies required by the national standard through your years of work experience.
What kind of polymer experience is most relevant?
Experience in raw material manufacturing, including work with thermoplastics, thermosetting polymers, blow moulding, or cablemaking, is highly relevant. The process looks at your ability to manage production runs, solve product faults, and maintain quality standards.
Will I need to complete any training?
If the RTO's assessor identifies specific areas where your evidence doesn't fully meet the qualification requirements, you may be required to complete targeted gap training. This builds on your existing expertise rather than making you start from scratch.
