About This Qualification
This qualification reflects pre-hospital and out-of-hospital workers employed to provide patient assessment, healthcare and transport services. These workers possess clinical skills and theoretical knowledge and provide clinical assessment and pre-hospital and out-of-hospital interventions to patients in an emergency, including providing advanced skills in life support.
Important: RPL It Australia is a student support service. All assessment and qualification issuance is conducted by the delivering Registered Training Organisation. RPL It does not deliver training, conduct assessments, or issue qualifications.

What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.
You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

Workplace conditions apply to this qualification
To meet the national standard, this qualification requires at least 160 hours of documented work in a clinical health environment. If you are currently working in an emergency or patient transport role, your daily professional activities can be used to satisfy this requirement through a verified logbook or supervisor sign-off.

How do I get started with RPL for this qualification?
You begin with a free skills review where our assessors map your emergency care experience against the qualification requirements. Once your eligibility is confirmed, you will compile a portfolio of evidence, which is then formally assessed by our partner RTO to grant your diploma.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?
Yes, the Diploma of Emergency Health Care issued through RPL is exactly the same nationally recognised qualification as one obtained through traditional classroom study. It is issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and carries the same weight with employers across Australia.
How long does the process typically take?
Most candidates complete their RPL process within 4 to 6 weeks once their evidence portfolio has been submitted. The timeline depends largely on how quickly you can gather documentation of your clinical experience and interventions.
What kind of evidence do I need to provide for this diploma?
You will need to provide documentation of your clinical practice, such as de-identified patient care records, incident reports, workplace observations, supervisor testimonials, and proof of your advanced life support skills.
I already work in the field; do I still need to do a work placement?
Because you are using RPL, your current or past employment in emergency health care often serves as the placement component. If your evidence demonstrates you have met the required clinical hours and assessment tasks in a real-world setting, additional placement is typically not required.
Can I use this qualification to work as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?
Absolutely. This qualification is specifically designed for roles like EMTs and out-of-hospital workers. It validates your ability to provide clinical assessment and pre-hospital interventions in emergency situations.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one obtained through full-time study?
Yes. RPL is a legitimate form of assessment within the Australian VET system. The qualification issued is identical to one obtained through any other mode of delivery and is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
Who assesses my evidence?
Your evidence is assessed by a qualified assessor employed or contracted by the delivering Registered Training Organisation (RTO), not by RPL It. The assessor holds the credentials required under the 2025 Standards for RTOs and has current industry experience.
What if gaps are identified in my skills?
If the assessor identifies areas where your evidence does not fully demonstrate competency, the RTO can provide gap training. The RTO will discuss any associated requirements or costs with you if this becomes necessary. Gap training is targeted to the specific areas identified and is designed to help you meet the full requirements of the qualification.
What if I don’t have enough experience for RPL?
If the initial skills review indicates that RPL is not suitable for you at this time, we’ll let you know honestly and discuss alternative options. We would rather direct you to the right pathway than enrol you in a process that won’t lead to a successful outcome.
How long does the RPL process take?
