About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of entry level clinical coders who use a range of skills and knowledge to analyse clinical documentation using a standardised classification system for assigning codes to represent care provided to patients in the health care system. Clinical coders work in the health care system and the health data they produce is used to meet national and jurisdictional reporting requirements, assist in health service planning, monitor patient safety, assist in research, and to underpin information for the hospital funding models. Entry level clinical coders are responsible for the coding of moderately complex medical records. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication. The volume of learning of a Diploma is typically 1 - 2 years.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is the Diploma of Clinical Coding currently available via RPL?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that specialise in this qualification. While not immediately available for enrolment, registering your interest ensures you are notified the moment the pathway is active.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering interest allows us to gauge demand and accelerate the development of recognition pathways. It also ensures you receive early access to the skills review process once we have finalised our RTO partnerships for this health information sector.
Is RPL the same as studying the Diploma?
Recognition of Prior Learning is a different pathway, not a different standard. Your existing experience is assessed against the same national competencies as a student, ensuring the resulting qualification is equally valued and recognised.
What kind of experience is relevant for this RPL pathway?
Relevant experience includes working with medical records, applying ICD-10-AM standards, and understanding the relationship between clinical documentation and hospital funding models in the Australian health care system.
Will I need to provide samples of my coding work?
Yes, as part of a formal assessment, you would typically provide evidence of your coding accuracy and your ability to interpret clinical documentation across basic and moderately complex medical cases.
