It covers the care, maintenance and performance of racehorses and the tasks and duties associated with running a racing establishment, including managing staff, finances and equipment. Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is RPL for this qualification currently available?
We are currently in the process of identifying RTO partners who meet our standards for the Certificate IV in Racing. At this stage, we are accepting registrations of interest from experienced trainers.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering ensures you are the first to know when an RTO partner is secured. It also allows us to begin a preliminary review of your experience so you are prepared for the assessment process immediately.
Is RPL the same as completing a training course?
No. While a training course teaches you new skills, RPL is a process of evidence collection where a qualified assessor from an RTO evaluates the skills you already possess against national standards.
Do I need a Certificate III before applying for this RPL?
The training package requires either a relevant Certificate III (such as Trackwork Rider or Stablehand) or the demonstration of equivalent skills and knowledge in horse welfare and management. We can help you determine if your experience meets this threshold.
Can I use this for both Harness and Thoroughbred racing?
The competencies apply to both codes. However, your final qualification will include a statement specifying which racing code—harness or thoroughbred—the assessment was conducted under.
