About This Qualification

This qualification provides a trade outcome in farriery. It relates to the work activities undertaken by a farrier who is engaged or employed to provide equine hoof care and shoeing services. Farriers are generally self-employed, working autonomously and taking responsibility for their own functions and outputs in a range of varied contexts that may be complex and non-routine. Farriers require theoretical knowledge of equine anatomy, biomechanics and pathologies and the ability to apply knowledge to technical solutions for a range of predictable and unpredictable problems. The ability to interpret and accurately communicate information to owners/carers and veterinarians concerning equine hoof and shoe care and related health issues in a variety of circumstances is required. To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work placement as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of ACMFAR405 Coordinate day to day equine service operations. Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available through RPL It?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that specialise in farriery. While we are not yet conducting assessments for this specific qualification, you can register your interest to be the first to know when the pathway opens.
Why should I register my interest?
By registering, you secure priority access to our free skills review once the qualification is live. We will also keep you updated on any specific evidence requirements that the RTOs may prioritise for farriers.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?
Yes. A qualification achieved through Recognition of Prior Learning is issued by an RTO and carries the same national weight as one earned through traditional study. The only difference is how your competency is demonstrated.
How do the 120 hours of work placement work with RPL?
This qualification requires 120 hours of documented placement. For experienced farriers, your existing daily work in the industry can often be used to satisfy this requirement, provided it is documented according to the RTO's assessment standards.
Can I use my own forged shoes as evidence?
Absolutely. Physical evidence of your craftsmanship, such as standard and corrective shoes you have forged and fitted, is a vital part of demonstrating your technical competency to an assessor.
