About This Qualification

This qualification applies to members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and to employees of civil Aviation Maintenance Organisations (AMOs) who work on the maintenance of aircraft and personal life support equipment and on the fabrication and maintenance of aircraft furnishings. The qualification typically applies to those who work independently or as part of a team under direct and/or indirect supervision, following set procedures and methods, requiring some discretion and judgement. They are responsible for the quality of their own outputs and require a high level of analysis and risk assessment within familiar and unfamiliar contexts. High level communications skills are required when fitting individuals with items of personal life support equipment and when determining item fabrication requirements. The qualification applies to workplaces that operate under the airworthiness regulatory systems of the Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Regulatory and licensing requirements associated with MEA units of competency required for this qualification must be met.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

📋

Work History & Roles

  • Comprehensive CV detailing ADF or civil AMO experience
  • Official position descriptions for life support or furnishing roles
  • Records of service or employment contracts
🛠️

Technical Maintenance

  • Maintenance logs for personal life support equipment
  • Fabrication records for aircraft interior furnishings
  • Equipment inspection and certification reports
⚖️

  • Completed aviation maintenance industry documentation
  • Work health and safety and risk assessment records
✈️

Operational Evidence

  • Aircraft flight servicing records and marshalling logs
  • Photos or videos of equipment fitting and testing

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available for RPL?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) who can deliver this specific qualification. By registering your interest, you will be the first to know when the pathway is open for assessment.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering helps us gauge the demand for this specialised Aeroskills qualification and allows us to provide you with updates on RTO availability and the specific evidence requirements as they are finalised.
Is RPL the same as completing a training course?
No. Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment process that recognises the skills you have already developed through your career. It respects your existing expertise by assessing it against national standards rather than requiring you to repeat training.
Can I use my ADF experience for this qualification?
Yes. This qualification is specifically designed to align with the skills developed by ADF members working in life support and furnishing roles under DASA airworthiness systems.
What happens if the assessor identifies gaps in my evidence?
If the RTO's assessor identifies areas where your evidence does not fully meet the competency standards, they will provide a pathway for gap training to help you demonstrate the remaining requirements.
