Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

🏗️

Work History & Roles

  • Current resume detailing your time as a floorman, roustabout, or lease hand
  • Detailed position descriptions from onshore drilling or well servicing sites
  • Letters of employment or reference from site supervisors or drillers
🔧

Rig Operations

  • Daily drilling reports or rig floor logs showing involvement in pipe handling
  • Records of rig lease operations, including site setup and equipment cleaning
  • Documentation of basic equipment maintenance and rig floor routines
🛡️

Safety & Risk Control

  • Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) you have authored
  • Records of participation in blowout prevention (BOP) or well control drills
  • Site induction records and evidence of local risk control participation
📋

Certifications & Training

  • Existing high risk work licences for dogging or basic rigging
  • Current First Aid or Gas Test Atmospheres certifications
  • Records of 4WD operation or telescopic materials handler training

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available through RPL It?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that deliver this specific resources and infrastructure qualification. It is not available for immediate enrolment.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering ensures you are the first to know once a suitable RTO partner is secured. It allows us to keep you informed about the specific evidence requirements for the onshore drilling sector.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?
Yes. A qualification earned through Recognition of Prior Learning is identical to one earned through traditional study. Both are issued by an RTO and meet the same national standards; the only difference is how you demonstrate your competency.
What kind of site evidence will I eventually need?
You will likely need to provide practical evidence such as photos of you performing rig floor operations, supervisor witness statements, and safety documentation like JSAs or incident reports you have contributed to.
Does this qualification cover High Risk Work Licences?
The qualification includes elective units related to dogging and rigging, but the actual High Risk Work Licence must be issued by your state's workplace safety regulator after a formal assessment.
