What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

Is this qualification currently available for enrolment?+
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that specialise in Public Safety. By registering your interest, you will be the first to know when the RPL pathway for this qualification is officially launched.
Why should I register my interest now?+
Registering your interest allows us to gauge demand and accelerate our partnership discussions. It also ensures you receive a preliminary suitability review early, helping you understand if your SES experience aligns with the Diploma requirements before the program opens.
Is RPL the same as completing the study through a training course?+
RPL is an assessment-only pathway that recognises the skills you have already developed on the job. It is not a shortcut, but a different form of evidence collection. The resulting qualification is identical to one earned through traditional study and is nationally recognised.
Do I need to be a paid employee of the SES to qualify?+
No. The RPL process assesses competency, not employment status. Many SES leaders are volunteers who have developed high-level management skills through years of service; this experience is just as valid as that of a paid professional.
What happens if I have gaps in my evidence?+
If the RTO's assessor identifies areas where your evidence doesn't fully meet the national standard, we will guide you through gap training. This involves targeted learning to address specific competencies, ensuring you can meet the requirements without repeating what you already know.
What does registering my interest mean?+
Registering your interest means you'd like to be notified when this qualification becomes available through RPL. There's no commitment. We'll contact you when an RTO partnership is confirmed for this qualification.
Why isn't this qualification available yet?+
RPL It works with partner RTOs to deliver qualifications. We're currently exploring RTO partnerships for this qualification. Registering your interest helps us prioritise which qualifications to focus on next.
What happens after I register my interest?+
You'll receive a confirmation, and we'll keep your details on file. When a partner RTO is confirmed for this qualification, we'll contact you with the next steps, including how to start your free skills review.
Can I still do a free skills review for this qualification?+
Yes. A free skills review helps you understand whether your experience aligns with the qualification requirements, regardless of whether an RTO partner is currently available. It's a useful first step while you wait.
