About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of workers who apply a range of laboratory technologies to conduct scientific-technical tests in most industry sectors, utilising specialist technical knowledge. They conduct a wide range of routine and complex, specialised tests where atypical samples may be involved and the instrumentation used has a wide range of operating variables. Workers communicate sample requirements to other personnel and may liaise with suppliers to troubleshoot product non-conformance. They may also demonstrate methods to others and train team members to collect samples and conduct basic tests reliably. Workers contribute to the modification of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and enterprise methods when necessary and they may also have a role in the planning of schedules and monitoring of resources in their work area. Work is carried out according to established procedures, often under the management of laboratory or quality managers, or scientific/medical professionals. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements exist at the time of publication.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

🔬

Work History & Roles

  • Detailed CV outlining technical laboratory experience
  • Position descriptions for senior technical officer roles
  • Performance reviews highlighting laboratory leadership
📊

Technical Testing & Analysis

  • Records of complex scientific-technical tests conducted
  • Data interpretation reports and analysis of atypical samples
  • Instrumental analysis results using UV/VIS or GC-MS
📋

Quality & SOPs

  • Contributions to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) modifications
  • Quality system audit logs and compliance documentation
  • Continuous improvement records for laboratory methods
⚙️

Equipment & Calibration

  • Maintenance schedules for specialised laboratory instruments
  • Calibration logs for measuring devices and recording equipment
  • Troubleshooting records for product non-conformance
👥

Supervision & Training

  • Evidence of demonstrating methods or training team members
  • Work schedules and resource monitoring documentation
  • Logs of sample collection supervision and reliability checks

Is RPL the same as studying for a Diploma?
No. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that assesses the skills and knowledge you have already acquired through your work in laboratories. It is an assessment-only pathway that recognises your existing expertise against national standards.
What are the entry requirements for this qualification?
Entry usually requires a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques, a higher STEM-related qualification, or significant evidence of technical laboratory skills and employment experience in the field.
Which industries recognise this Diploma?
This qualification is highly versatile and applies to pathology, forensic science, manufacturing, food technology, biotechnology, and mineral assay laboratory environments.
