Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Why is this qualification listed as 'Register Interest'?
We are currently in the process of vetting Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to ensure they have the specific expertise required to assess the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs. This ensures your experience is evaluated by a partner who understands the complexities of the community services sector.
Why should I register my interest now?
By registering, you will be among the first to be notified as soon as a partner RTO is ready to accept RPL applications. It also allows us to provide you with preliminary guidance on the evidence you may need to gather while the pathway is being finalised.
Is RPL the same as completing a traditional course?
Yes. The outcome is the same nationally recognised qualification. The difference lies in the evidence: instead of attending classes to learn new skills, you provide evidence that you already demonstrate the required competencies through your professional work.
Do I need a current First Aid certificate for this RPL process?
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is a core unit of this qualification. If you have a current, nationally recognised First Aid certificate, it can be used as direct evidence. If not, the RTO may require you to complete this unit as part of your assessment.
What if my work involves sensitive or confidential client information?
Respecting client privacy is a core competency in this field. When providing evidence such as case notes or treatment plans, all identifying information must be redacted. We can guide you on how to present your evidence while maintaining strict confidentiality standards.
How much experience is typically needed for a successful RPL application?
While there is no set minimum, most successful candidates for a Certificate IV have at least two to three years of consistent experience in an alcohol and other drugs or mental health outreach context.
