Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is RPL currently available for the Certificate III in Terminal Train Driving?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations that offer this specific qualification. At this stage, we are gathering interest from experienced rail professionals to determine the demand for a recognition pathway.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering ensures you are the first to be notified once a suitable RTO partner is secured. It also helps us demonstrate to training organisations that there is a community of skilled terminal drivers seeking formal recognition of their expertise.
Is the RPL process the same as doing a course?
No. While a course teaches you new skills, RPL assesses the skills you already possess. It is a process of gathering evidence to demonstrate to an assessor that your experience meets the national standards for the qualification.
What type of experience is most relevant for this RPL?
Experience in locomotive start-up, train preparation, shunting rolling stock, and applying rail safeworking rules is highly relevant. Your expertise in terminal safety and fatigue management is also a critical component of the assessment.
Will I need to attend a classroom?
The goal of RPL is to minimise classroom time by recognising your prior learning. However, the RTO's assessor may require a practical demonstration of your skills or a conversation to clarify how your evidence meets specific competency standards.
