About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of a picture framer. Picture framers usually work in small retail outlets, which provide framing services to the general public. However, they may also undertake framing for businesses and specialise in particular types of framing. Picture framers assess framing design requirements and use a range of technical skills to create artwork packages of varying complexity. In the first instance, they assess framing requirements from both a technical and design perspectives. Picture framers then use discretion and judgment and specialised knowledge and skills to select and use equipment and materials to achieve the desired framing effects. There are no specific licences that relate to this qualification. However, depending on the jurisdiction, licensing or regulatory requirements may apply to the use of some units in this qualification. Local regulations should be checked for details.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

  • Position descriptions or contracts from framing businesses or galleries
  • Reference letters from employers or clients confirming your technical competency
🪚

Cutting & Joining

  • Photos or videos demonstrating your ability to cut mouldings to precise lengths
  • Evidence of joining various moulding types to create structurally sound frames
  • Records showing the safe use of workshop equipment and machinery
📐

Matting & Mounting

  • Work samples or photos of precision mat board cutting for different artwork sizes
  • Documentation of mounting techniques used for various media, such as prints or textiles
  • Evidence of handling and cutting specialised glazing materials like UV-protective glass
🎨

Design & Assembly

  • Examples of framing design requirements and client consultation records
  • Photos showing the assembly of complex artwork packages, including spacers or shadow boxes
  • Evidence of de-framing artwork safely and assessing preservation needs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

When will RPL for this qualification be available?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that specialise in furnishing and framing. By registering your interest, you will be notified as soon as the pathway is active.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering interest helps us understand the demand for this specific qualification. It also ensures you are at the front of the queue for a free skills review once our RTO partners are ready to begin assessments.
Is RPL for picture framing the same as doing a course?
No. Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment-only pathway. It is designed for those who already have the skills and knowledge, allowing them to be assessed against national standards without repeating training for things they already know.
What kind of experience do I need for this qualification?
Assessors will look for evidence of professional experience in a framing environment. This typically includes proficiency in cutting mouldings, joining frames, matting, glazing, and understanding the preservation requirements of different artworks.
Will I need to provide photos of my work?
Yes, visual evidence is often a key part of the RPL process for trades. Photos or videos of you performing specific tasks, like cutting glass or assembling complex frames, help demonstrate your competency to the assessor.
What happens if I have experience but lack a specific skill?
If the RTO assessor identifies a gap in your evidence, they will provide targeted gap training. This allows you to complete only the specific units or tasks you need, rather than starting the entire qualification from scratch.
