Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

When will RPL for this qualification be available?
We are currently in the process of vetting Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to ensure they meet our standards for trade recognition. Once a suitable partnership is established, we will open the qualification for skills reviews.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest ensures you are the first to know when the pathway opens. It also helps us demonstrate the demand for toolmaking recognition to our RTO partners, potentially accelerating the development of the assessment process.
Is RPL for toolmaking the same as completing an apprenticeship?
RPL leads to the same nationally recognised qualification as an apprenticeship. The difference lies in the evidence: an apprentice learns on the job, while an RPL candidate demonstrates they have already mastered those skills through years of experience.
What if my experience is specific to die maintenance rather than manufacture?
Toolmaking is a broad trade. Your evidence portfolio will be assessed against the specific units of competency. If your experience is deep in maintenance but lighter in manufacture, the RTO assessor will help identify if your evidence meets the standard or if gap training is required.
How do I prove my precision measurement skills?
Evidence often includes calibration records, quality control reports, and photos of you using precision tools like micrometers or vernier calipers. The assessor may also request a practical demonstration or a technical interview to verify your competence.
Does this qualification cover CNC machining?
While the core units focus on manual machining (lathe, milling, grinding), elective units can often include CNC operations. We will work with RTOs to ensure the elective streams align with modern toolmaking practices.
