Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

📋

Work History & Roles

  • Comprehensive resume showing textile industry experience
  • Detailed position descriptions for mechanic or technician roles
  • Letters of service from manufacturing employers
⚙️

Machine Setup & Adjustment

  • Logs of machine changeovers (knitting, weaving, or spinning)
  • Equipment adjustment records for footwear or tufting machinery
  • Photos or videos of mechanical setup procedures
🛠️

Maintenance & Repair

  • Preventative maintenance schedules and completed logs
  • Reports documenting non-heavy engineering repairs
  • Fault-finding and troubleshooting documentation
📐

Technical Operations

  • Evidence of interpreting technical drawings and specifications
  • Engineering measurement and computation records
  • Workplace safety and manual handling risk assessments

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available for RPL?
We are currently in the discovery phase for this qualification. While not yet available, we are actively seeking Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) with the scope to assess this specialist engineering trade.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest allows us to gauge industry demand. When we demonstrate to our RTO partners that experienced textile mechanics are seeking recognition, it prioritizes the development of these RPL pathways.
Is RPL the same as completing a textile apprenticeship?
The qualification issued is identical. While an apprenticeship involves a mix of on and off-the-job training, RPL recognizes that you have already acquired those same trade skills through years of practical experience.
What kind of machinery experience is relevant?
Experience with a wide range of textile equipment is valid, including carding, footwear manufacture, knitting, sewing, spinning, tufting, or weaving machinery.
Do I need to be a qualified engineer to apply?
No. This qualification is designed for trade-level mechanics who often start as production operators and develop advanced mechanical skills over time.
