Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

🏗️

Work History & Roles

  • A comprehensive resume detailing your years in fabrication
  • Position descriptions from engineering or manufacturing firms
  • Letters of service from previous employers
📐

Technical Documentation

  • Interpreted technical drawings and specifications
  • Records of engineering measurements and computations
  • Work activity plans and production schedules
🛡️

Safety & Compliance

  • JSA and SWMS records from the workshop
  • Manual handling and manufacturing safety logs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

When will RPL for this qualification be available?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that specialise in Fabrication Engineering. By registering your interest, you will be the first to know when we are ready to facilitate your assessment.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering allows us to perform a preliminary review of your experience. This ensures that once our RTO partnerships are active, we can move quickly to guide you through the evidence collection process.
Is RPL for the Fabrication Trade the same as studying?
No. While study involves learning new skills, RPL is a process of formal assessment. It recognises the skills you have already mastered through years of on-the-job experience in the engineering industry.
What type of fabrication experience is relevant?
Experience in structural steel erection, sheetmetal work, welding, blacksmithing, and surface finishing are all highly relevant to this qualification's requirements.
Do I need to be a current apprentice to apply?
While this qualification is often used for apprenticeships, the RPL pathway is specifically designed for experienced workers who have already developed their trade skills through years of practice.
Will my existing welding certifications count?
Yes. Existing certifications and welding logs are excellent forms of evidence that demonstrate your technical competency to an assessor.
