Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

What Kind of Experience Counts?

If RPL becomes available for this qualification, the types of experience and evidence that would typically be relevant include:

🌳

Work History & Roles

  • A detailed resume outlining your experience in arboriculture or tree maintenance
  • Position descriptions highlighting ground-based tree worker responsibilities
  • Reference letters from supervisors or qualified arborists verifying your skills
⚙️

Machinery & Equipment

  • Records of operating and maintaining stump grinders and wood chippers
  • Chainsaw maintenance logs and records of pole saw operation
  • Equipment pre-start checklists and maintenance schedules you have completed
⛓️

Ground Operations

  • Evidence of performing ground-based rigging to support climbing arborists
  • Photos or videos of pruning operations and basic tree felling
  • Work logs demonstrating tree identification and treatment application
🛡️

Safety & Compliance

  • Completed Job Safety Assessments (JSA) or Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)
  • Evidence of site traffic management and public safety cordons
  • Current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certification

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is this qualification currently available through RPL It Australia?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) who have this qualification on their scope. By registering your interest, you will be among the first to be notified when the RPL pathway is active.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering allows us to gauge demand and expedite the partnership process with relevant RTOs. It also ensures you receive early access to a free skills review once the qualification is available for assessment.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one earned through full-time study?
Yes. A qualification achieved through Recognition of Prior Learning is issued by a Registered Training Organisation and carries the same national weight as one earned through a traditional classroom or apprenticeship pathway.
Do I need to be currently working in arboriculture to apply?
RPL is based on your total experience. While current employment is beneficial for providing recent evidence, the assessment considers your entire work history and the skills you have developed over time.
How does this qualification relate to tree removal licences?
This qualification demonstrates your technical competency in arboriculture tasks. However, many states and councils require specific permits or additional high-risk work licences for certain types of tree felling or vegetation management near power lines.
