About This Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working in catering operations who use a range of cookery skills and sound knowledge of kitchen operations to prepare food items. Using discretion and judgement, they work with some independence and under limited supervision using plans, policies and procedures to guide work activities. This qualification does not meet the requirements for trade recognition as a cook, but can provide a pathway towards achieving that. This qualification provides a pathway to work in various catering settings, such as hospitals and aged care facilities, sporting and entertainment venues, hotel banqueting departments, cook–chill production kitchens, and mobile catering businesses of varying size. The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Could RPL Be Right for You?

Experience can be evidence.

RPL is the process that helps you demonstrate it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills, knowledge, and experience you've gained through your career to determine whether you meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It isn't a shortcut — it applies the same assessment standards as any other pathway.

RPL typically involves:

📋

A review of your work experience against the qualification requirements

💼

Compilation of an evidence portfolio demonstrating your competency

👤

Assessment by a qualified assessor from a Registered Training Organisation

🎯

If gaps are identified, targeted training to build on your existing expertise

ℹ️ Important Pathway Advice

RPL isn't the right pathway for everyone. If you don't have substantial, relevant, and current industry experience, a traditional study pathway may serve you better.

Our approach:

“We'd rather guide you to the right pathway than enrol you in the wrong one.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this qualification and RPL.

Is the Certificate III in Catering currently available via RPL?
We are currently in the process of securing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations to offer this specific qualification. At this stage, we are accepting registrations of interest from experienced catering professionals.
Why should I register my interest now?
By registering, you will be the first to know when a formal recognition pathway becomes available. We will also provide you with guidance on how to start preparing your evidence portfolio early.
Is RPL the same as completing a catering course?
No. While the qualification you receive is the same, RPL recognises the skills you have already achieved through your work history, whereas a traditional course is designed to teach you those skills from scratch.

This qualification does not meet the full requirements for trade recognition as a cook on its own, but it serves as an excellent foundation and a formal pathway toward achieving that status in the future.
What types of work environments are relevant for this qualification?
Relevant experience includes work in hospitals, aged care facilities, sporting and entertainment venues, hotel banqueting, and mobile catering businesses.
How do I prove my skills if I don't have many documents?
Evidence can take many forms, including photos of your work, videos of you performing tasks in a kitchen, and third-party reports from supervisors who can verify your competency.
